The route: six days across Green Spain
The Costa Verde Express runs between Bilbao and Santiago de Compostela — six days and five nights through Green Spain, with departures alternating direction. The train parks at stations overnight, so nights are still and mornings begin somewhere new. The eastbound itinerary:
- Day 1 — Santiago to Viveiro. Boarding near Santiago de Compostela, a first look at the naval city of Ferrol, and overnight in the estuary town of Viveiro.
- Day 2 — Ribadeo, Taramundi and Luarca. Into Asturias by way of Taramundi, a village of water-powered forges — the Os Teixois ethnographic site and its knife-making museum — ending in the harbor village of Luarca.
- Day 3 — Gijón, Oviedo and Llanes. Asturias' two great cities in one day: maritime Gijón and the pre-Romanesque capital Oviedo, then east to Llanes.
- Day 4 — Arenas de Cabrales. Into the mountains for a cheese cave in Arenas de Cabrales, where Spain's mightiest blue cheese ripens in natural limestone caverns. Overnight at Cabezón de la Sal.
- Day 5 — Santillana del Mar and Altamira. The medieval town Sartre called the prettiest village in Spain, and the Altamira museum with its faithful re-creation of the famous painted cave. On to Santander.
- Day 6 — Laredo to Bilbao. A last stretch of Cantabrian coast through Laredo, arriving in Bilbao around 4:30 p.m.
The Gran Clase Suites
The train carries a maximum of 46 guests in 24 Gran Clase Suites of roughly 6 square meters, each with a matrimonial double bed (1.35 × 1.80 m) and a private en-suite bathroom with shower.
