The route: six days across Green Spain

The Costa Verde Express runs between Santiago de Compostela and Bilbao — six days and five nights through Green Spain, in either direction. The train parks at stations overnight, so nights are still and mornings begin somewhere new. The Santiago-to-Bilbao itinerary:

• Day 1 — Santiago to Viveiro. Reception and old-town visit in Santiago de Compostela, then a coach transfer to Ferrol, where guests board the train. The train continues to Viveiro, where guests spend the night on board.
• Day 2 — Ribadeo, Taramundi and Luarca. Visit to Ribadeo on the Lugo coast, then the Taramundi area, known for its traditional crafts and nature. The train continues into Asturias to the white town of Luarca for the night.
• Day 3 — Oviedo, Gijón and Llanes. Visits to Oviedo, the pre-Romanesque capital, and to the seaside city of Gijón. In the evening the train runs along the coast to Llanes.
• Day 4 — The Picos de Europa and Arenas de Cabrales. A day among the mountain villages of the Picos de Europa and the Cabrales area, where Spain's mightiest blue cheese ripens in natural limestone caverns. The train then continues into Cantabria, with the night at Cabezón de la Sal.
• Day 5 — Santillana del Mar and Altamira. The medieval town Sartre called the prettiest village in Spain, and the Altamira Neocave, a faithful re-creation of the famous painted cave. Lunch as the train runs on to Santander, then free time.
• Day 6 — Santander to Bilbao. The train arrives in Bilbao at breakfast. After a farewell to the crew, the day includes a visit to the Guggenheim Museum and lunch, and the journey ends.

The Gran Clase Suites

The train carries a maximum of 46 guests in 23 Gran Clase Suites of roughly 6 square meters, each with a matrimonial double bed (1.35 × 1.80 m) and a private en-suite bathroom with shower.
