The journey
Spain's most luxurious train. Just 28 guests in 14 Deluxe Suites — at 12.82 square metres, the largest cabins on Spanish rails — ride the narrow-gauge line along the Bay of Biscay from the Basque coast to the end of the Camino de Santiago — the rail section runs Bilbao to Ferrol, with short coach links from San Sebastián and on to Santiago. Four restored lounge cars, a pub car with a dance floor, and eight days of Green Spain: the Guggenheim, two days in and around the Picos de Europa, Gaudí's El Capricho in Comillas, Santillana del Mar, Luarca and Santiago's cathedral.

Day by day
The itinerary
Directions alternate by departure — the reverse itinerary visits the same places the other way round, with a slightly different day plan. See the calendar for each date’s direction.
Day 1
San Sebastián — Bilbao — Carranza
Meet in San Sebastián at lunchtime for a look around the city and lunch, then a coach transfer to Bilbao, where you board the train, meet the crew and raise a welcome toast. First dinner on board; the train overnights at Carranza.
Day 2
Carranza — Bilbao — Santander
Back into Bilbao over breakfast for its riverside architecture and the Guggenheim quarter; after lunch the train continues west to Santander, with free time before dinner. Night in Santander.
Day 3
Potes — Comillas — Cabezón de la Sal
An excursion inland to the edge of the Picos de Europa — the mountain town of Potes and its valley villages — then Comillas and Gaudí's El Capricho. Dinner on board; night at Cabezón de la Sal.
Day 4
Santillana del Mar — Llanes
The cobbled medieval village of Santillana del Mar; lunch on board as the train follows the coast into Asturias, arriving in the seaside town of Llanes with time to wander. Night in Llanes.
Day 5
Picos de Europa — Oviedo
A day among the peaks and gorges of the Picos de Europa, then on to Oviedo with free time in the old town. Dinner on board; the train overnights in Oviedo.
Day 6
Gijón — Luarca
A stop in seafront Gijón, then an afternoon run along the coast to Luarca, the white fishing town of the Costa Verde, with free time on the harbour. Night in Luarca.
Day 7
Ribadeo — Viveiro
Across the Eo estuary into Galicia for a visit to Ribadeo, then along the Lugo coast to Viveiro. Night in Viveiro.
Day 8
Ferrol — Santiago de Compostela
A last breakfast on board as the train runs to Ferrol, the end of the line; a coach continues to Santiago de Compostela for a guided walk and free time by the cathedral. Journey ends.

Transcantábrico Gran Lujo FAQs
How large are the Gran Lujo suites?
The 14 Deluxe Suites measure 12.82 square metres (138 sq ft) including the bathroom — the largest cabins on any Spanish luxury train. Ten have a double bed (1.50 × 1.90 m) and four have twin beds (0.75 × 1.90 m); each has a living room with a convertible sofa-bed and an en-suite bathroom with bathtub or shower.
What does El Transcantábrico Gran Lujo cost?
2027 season fares start at €11,100 per person in a double Deluxe Suite (€19,200 single occupancy, €9,200 per person triple), all-inclusive. Special offers are available on selected departures — sign in to your account to see them.
When does it run?
Roughly late March to the end of October, departing weekly on Saturdays and alternating direction — San Sebastián to Santiago one week, the reverse the next.
Does the train run all the way from San Sebastián to Santiago?
No — the rail section runs between Bilbao and Ferrol. On the westbound trip a coach takes you from San Sebastián to board in Bilbao, and another coach carries you from Ferrol to Santiago de Compostela on the final day; the eastbound trip does the same in reverse.
Is everything really included?
Yes — gourmet meals with wines (on board and at acclaimed restaurants along the route), every guided excursion and entrance fee, live entertainment, a luxury support coach and a dedicated crew.
