The Best Time to Ride a Luxury Train in Spain, Month by Month
"When should we go?" is the second question every caller asks us, right after "which train?" — and the answer depends almost entirely on which half of Spain you have chosen. Andalusia and the Cantabrian coast run on different climates, different rhythms and, conveniently, largely complementary seasons. Here is how we advise our own clients, month by month.
Two Spains, two calendars
The Al Ándalus crosses Andalusia, Extremadura and Castilla–La Mancha — the hot, dry, luminous south. The El Transcantábrico Gran Lujo and Costa Verde Express hug the north coast through Green Spain, which is green for a reason: it is temperate, Atlantic and blessedly cool when Seville is baking. Both operating seasons run roughly spring through October, with weekly departures alternating direction — but the sweet spots fall in different months.
Month by month
February–March: planning season
The trains are mostly still in their winter workshops, being polished and provisioned. This is prime booking season for the year ahead — and, increasingly, for the year after that. The Al Ándalus 2027 season opens March 29 and runs through October.
April: Andalusia wakes up
The southern season begins in earnest. Orange blossom scents Seville, the countryside is briefly, improbably green, and temperatures sit in the comfortable 70s°F. April on the Al Ándalus is one of the finest weeks in European travel, and it books accordingly. The northern trains begin stirring too — the Gran Lujo season starts between March and April.
May: the golden month
If we could only travel one month, this would be it. Andalusia is warm but not yet hot; Green Spain has opened its May–October high season with wildflowers on the meadows and snow still dusting the Picos de Europa. Every train is running. Unsurprisingly, May departures are among the first to sell out.
June: last comfortable call for the south
Early June in Andalusia is still very pleasant, especially the excursion-heavy coastal days around Cádiz and Jerez. By late June the interior begins its summer climb. In the north, June is simply lovely — long days, mild air, sea mist burning off by mid-morning.
July–August: the north's moment
Here is the fact that surprises American travelers most: while Seville and Córdoba regularly top 100°F, the Cantabrian coast summers in the 70s. July and August are exactly when the Gran Lujo and Costa Verde Express make the most sense — beach-walking weather at Playa de las Catedrales, crisp mountain air at Covadonga, cider poured from height in Oviedo. This is also Spanish vacation season, so the towns are at their liveliest. We do not recommend the deep south in high summer, and the Al Ándalus calendar reflects that reality.
September: the connoisseur's choice
September may be the single best all-around month. Andalusia exhales — the heat breaks, the light turns amber, and the sherry country around Jerez is in harvest mood. Green Spain stays mild and the summer crowds thin. Fair warning from our 2026 books: September and October Al Ándalus departures are nearly sold out, and only a few fall Costa Verde Express dates remain.
October: the elegant close
The final departures of the season. The south is warm and golden; the north turns russet and dramatic, with the first Atlantic storms making the cliff scenery even better from a lounge-car armchair. October travelers tend to be repeat luxury-train guests, which tells you something.
November–January: the trains rest
No departures — but the best cabin selection for the following season is claimed in these months. This is when our most experienced clients book.
Shoulder season: our honest advice
April, May, late September and October are the shoulder-and-sweet-spot months, and they carry no price penalty: fares are the same across the season, so the "best" weeks cost no more than the rest. The trade-off is purely availability. Because pricing does not vary, the early weeks and the fall weeks sell first, and single-occupancy suites — limited on every train — go first of all. If your dates are flexible, we suggest choosing by region first, month second, and letting the departure calendar settle the rest.
How far ahead should you book?
Our standing guidance is 6 to 12 months ahead, and 2026 has proven the point: as we write this in spring 2026, the marquee fall departures are close to gone. For 2027, the season is open now — Al Ándalus from March 29 through October, Costa Verde Express May through October — and early bookers currently save 10% with the code 2027SPAIN, which brings the Costa Verde Express down to €4,770 per person. Does it rain a lot in Green Spain?
It rains enough to keep it green, mostly in brief Atlantic passes rather than washed-out days — and summer is the driest stretch. Excursions run rain or shine, the support coach is always nearby, and honestly, the mist is part of the region's beauty. Pack a light rain layer and forget about it.
