An Anniversary or Honeymoon on a Spanish Luxury Train
A week on a Spanish luxury train is one of the most romantic ways we know to mark a milestone. You unpack once, someone else handles every detail, and each day ends with dinner and a glass of Spanish wine while the train rests quietly in a station for the night. But the three trains suit couples differently, and the right suite matters more on a celebration trip than on any other. Here is how we match couples to the right journey.
The most romantic choice: El Transcantábrico Gran Lujo
If budget allows, the Gran Lujo is our first recommendation for anniversaries and honeymoons. There are only 14 Deluxe Suites for a maximum of 28 guests, and each suite measures 12.82 m² — the largest on Spanish rails — with a separate sitting area, a private bathroom with hydromassage shower and steam sauna, and a double bed in ten of the fourteen suites (ask for one of those). The eight-day journey between San Sebastián and Santiago de Compostela follows Spain's green north coast: fishing villages, the Picos de Europa, cider houses and some of the best food in the country. For the 2027 season it starts at €11,100 per person, double occupancy.
The classic romance: Al Ándalus
Al Ándalus is the choice for couples who dream of flamenco, orange blossom and Moorish architecture. Its Belle Époque carriages were built between 1928 and 1930, and the whole train feels like a period film. Book the Suite Deluxe — about 8.3 m² with a fixed 1.50 × 1.90 m double bed — rather than the Gran Clase room, which has two single beds. The seven-day route runs between Seville and Madrid via Córdoba, Jerez, Cádiz, Mérida, Cáceres, Toledo and Aranjuez. Please note it does not go to Granada; if the Alhambra is part of your dream, we add it as a stay before or after the train. For 2027, the Suite Deluxe starts at €9,200 per person, double occupancy.
The relaxed escape: Costa Verde Express
The Costa Verde Express covers much of the same northern coast in six days, from Bilbao to Santiago, at a gentler price — from €5,300 per person in 2027. Its 23 Gran Clase Suites have a 1.35 × 1.80 m matrimonial double bed in about 6 m², so it is cozy rather than spacious. Couples who spend their days out exploring and their evenings in the lounge cars love it; couples who want to linger in their cabin usually prefer the Gran Lujo.
When to go
For the north, May, June and September bring long days, green hills and comfortable temperatures. For Al Ándalus, spring (April–May) and autumn (late September–October) avoid the Andalusian summer heat. Celebration dates sell early: we suggest booking nine to twelve months ahead for the Gran Lujo, and at least six months ahead for the other two. The departure calendar shows what is open now.
Making the week feel like an occasion
